Candidate for Department Surgeon ~ 2018-2019

I am a candidate for the high office of Department Surgeon for the year 2018-2019. I am asking for your support and your vote. I have served in several leadership roles in the VFW, at the Post, District, Department, and National levels. I believe my experience and dedication will allow me to be an exceptional Department Surgeon in the coming year.

My eligibility for membership in the VFW is based on my service in the Navy onboard the USS John Young (DD-973), where I was deployed during Operation Desert Storm. While deployed, the USS John Young served as the Navy’s Tomahawk missile strike platform. Because of its service, the unit was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

I joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2007. I have served four years as a Post Quartermaster and two years as a Post Commander, earning All-State honors in each office. I have also served as a Post Trustee and continue to serve on the Post’s Color Guard. On the District level, I have served as Adjutant in addition to serving in each chair in the line of succession leading up to District Commander. Under my leadership, the District earned All-State honors twice. I currently serve as a District Trustee and as the Department Student Veterans Chairman.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Master of Arts degree in English Composition and have worked for ten years as an English instructor at Longview Community College.

As your Department Surgeon, service to our veterans will be my most important function. I will pursue this goal by observing closely and reporting faithfully on the welfare of our veterans in our VA Hospitals and Veterans Homes. I will make it my duty to ensure that our veterans are not casualties of political wrangling and budget cuts and hold the current and future administrations accountable for the management of their welfare. I also intend to do everything I can to make sure that Missouri continues to have the best Service Officer Program in the Nation. Helping veterans receive the benefits and entitlements that they have earned must be the VFW’s top priority, and our Veterans Service Officer Program must be well supported if we hope to realize that goal. As Department Surgeon, I pledge to provide this support.

I have the support of my family and my Post and believe I have the experience, dedication, and commitment to fulfill the responsibilities of Department Surgeon.

I ask for your support in my quest for this high office.
