A panel of judges was recently convened to select the recipient of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Scout of the Year Scholarship for 2015. This scholarship program is only one of many youth-oriented programs sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars to recognize outstanding young people in our communities. The quality of the packets received for the 2015 competition, the record of individual achievement outlined, and the breadth and depth of service represented by the applicants was truly outstanding. Each and every application packet was an outstanding example of the success of the various Scouting programs.
However, as with any competition, there could only be one winner. The 2015 Missouri Veterans of Foreign Wars Scout of the Year is Katie Bruton, from Union, Missouri. Katie was sponsored by VFW Post 2661 in Washington, MO. A representative of the Greater St Louis Area Council, Katie is a registered member of Sea Scout Ship 5454, Venture Crew 2783, and Explorer Aviation Post 2297. Her awards and honors include the Sea Scout Quartermaster, Venturing Silver, National Youth Leadership Society, Regional and Area Venturing Leadership awards, and the Philmont Training Center Masters Square Knot. Katie is a student at St Francis Borgia High School in Washington, MO, where she has a cumulative grade point average of 3.924.
Katie will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Missouri. In addition, her application packet has been forwarded to VFW National Headquarters for consideration in the VFW’s National Scholarship awards selection.
